The recipe for Lay’s is simple: Potatoes, salt and oil. Despite that simplicity, the farmers who grow our crops and the teams that make our world-famous chips have put countless hours into mastering this recipe.
Food Reviewer Kevin Noparvar experienced this dedication firsthand when PepsiCo took him behind the scenes to see how some of his favorite chips go from farms to store shelves. Here’s what he learned:
Lay’s potatoes are grown with care.
While visiting Wisconsin farmers TJ Kennedy and Jeremie Pavelski, both of whom have been growing potatoes for more than 25 years, Kevin learned the two essential elements required to grow the perfect crop: Water and high-quality soil. And not just any potato can become a chip — after harvesting thousands of potatoes, the Heartland Farms team inspects each one by hand to ensure that only the best make the trip to the production plant.
PepsiCo’s teams make each batch with high standards.
There is a person whose job it is to taste Lay’s fresh off the line. PepsiCo’s on-site Taste Tester samples every batch of chips checking for the appearance, quality and texture that make chips worthy of a Lay’s bag.
Our chips are meant to be enjoyed.
The process of going from potato to chip is a fast one. The potatoes are washed, sliced, cooked and bagged all in the same day. This is also why Lay’s consistently taste great and are enjoyed by millions of fans around the world.
